Like curdled milk, America is clotted up . Political life is frozen, broken. Sloganeering dominates our discourse. Smug and self-righteous, we feed on forced smiles and balloon on fast food. Our problems persist. Our dissatisfactions persist.
How do we respond? Being honest with ourselves wouldn’t hurt. Fortunately, we have models in our cultural tradition for doing just that. This course looks at two American giants, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman, as guides on the path to open and creative inquiry. A fresh look might just encourage us to activate our humanity once more.
